====== Secure Shell on Legacy Macintosh ====== ===== Installation ===== For Macintosh OS version 9 or earlier, try using [[http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh/|Nifty Telnet]]. Download it at http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh/ and install it by uncompressing the program. OS X users can use the [[unix|Unix instructions]]. ===== Logging in using ssh ===== - Run Nifty Telnet. - Choose "Edit..." to edit the "untitled" shortcut. - Enter a name, say "Vassar CS", and the hostname, "mote33.cs.vassar.edu". Enter your user name. And last, change Protocol from "Telnet" to "SSH - Blowfish". Choose "Ok". - Choose "Connect" for your "Vassar CS" shortcut. - If this is the first time connecting to this host, an alert will inform you that "The public key for this host is unkown..." Verify the fingerprint as a0:d5:54:83:5b:9b:0d:9a:17:6a:cd:35:f6:bc:00:8e. and then choose to "Accept & Save". - Enter your password and choose "Login". You should see a bunch of messages welcoming you to the computer science department system. The last line is the shell, waiting for you to type a command. If this is your first time, try typing "ls" to get a listing of files in your home directory. When you have finished and want to end your connection, type "exit" into the shell before quitting Nifty Telnet. ===== Copying files between computers ===== Nift Telnet allows you to copy files over a network. Use the "Scp..." button to try this feature out. If you want to copy files to your account, a good place to put files in in you account's home directory: "/home/USER" where USER is replaced by your user name.
