It is quite simple to get to a machine in the department remotely from another machine in the department. All machines in the labs, classroom and faculty offices should already have an ssh client installed on them and those machines which allow remote access are running an ssh daemon to accept incoming connections.

For Macintosh OS version 9 or earlier, try using Nifty Telnet. Download it at <http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh/> and install it by uncompressing the program. OS X users can use the Unix instructions.

What is a Secure Shell?

(from <http://freessh.org>)(broken) “SSH (secure shell) is a internet protocol that allows a user to connect to a remote host via an encrypted link. "

A secure shell client allows you to connect to a remote computer. If you wish to access the Vasser CS Department Unix system outside of the lab, you will need to use a secure shell. The secure utilities correspond to older, non-secure counterparts. For example:

Overview

Installation

Any modern Unix-like operating systems should come with secure shell client utilities already installed. This is true for Mac OS X, Red Hat Linux, Mandrake Linux, FreeBSD and many others. If, however, you need a ssh client, you can download one from the openssh website: <http://www.openssh.org>.

Installation

To log in to the CS Department computers, you will need a SSH client. There are several free SSH clients available for Windows. We have used both PuTTY with success. We have also used WinSCP to copy files between Windows and Unix computers.
