Secure Shell on Legacy Macintosh

Installation

For Macintosh OS version 9 or earlier, try using Nifty Telnet. Download it at http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh/ and install it by uncompressing the program. OS X users can use the Unix instructions.

Logging in using ssh

  1. Run Nifty Telnet.
  2. Choose “Edit...” to edit the “untitled” shortcut.
  3. Enter a name, say “Vassar CS”, and the hostname, “mote33.cs.vassar.edu”. Enter your user name. And last, change Protocol from “Telnet” to “SSH - Blowfish”. Choose “Ok”.
  4. Choose “Connect” for your “Vassar CS” shortcut.
  5. If this is the first time connecting to this host, an alert will inform you that “The public key for this host is unkown...” Verify the fingerprint as a0:d5:54:83:5b:9b:0d:9a:17:6a:cd:35:f6:bc:00:8e. and then choose to “Accept & Save”.
  6. Enter your password and choose “Login”.

You should see a bunch of messages welcoming you to the computer science department system. The last line is the shell, waiting for you to type a command. If this is your first time, try typing “ls” to get a listing of files in your home directory.

When you have finished and want to end your connection, type “exit” into the shell before quitting Nifty Telnet.

Copying files between computers

Nift Telnet allows you to copy files over a network. Use the “Scp...” button to try this feature out.

If you want to copy files to your account, a good place to put files in in you account’s home directory: “/home/USER” where USER is replaced by your user name.
