These classes have been scheduled for Hrim-Schola III, a fiber schola hosted by the Shire of Frosted Hills, East Kingdom, Þóra Sharptooth.

Courses in Tablet Weaving

Introduction to Brocaded Tablet Weaving, Lady Mirabel Belchere
The class will cover, at minimum, the following: historical uses of brocaded bands, extant finds, patterns (extant patterns as well as how to design your own), and techniques. I will probably also have some setups for more experienced weavers, so that they may try brocading on fine-weight silk (60/2 is what I usually use). Materials fee. Limited to 12. One hour. First Session.
Tablet Woven Double Cloth, Lord Kormakr the Teeth
An intermediate-level discussion of the double-cloth (or double-faced) tablet-weaving technique, its history, methods and uses. One hour. Second Session.
Fabric Edge Finishing with Tubular Tablet Weaving, Lord Haraldr Bassi
A practical hands on class showing a method of edge finishing as found on period artifacts. One hour. Third Session.
Woodworking for the Tablet Weaver, Lord Haraldr Bassi
A survey of different loom designs, from period to modern, that can be built with available materials and available plans. Also a look at other weaving tools and how to make them. One hour. Second Session.

Courses in Knotting, Knitting, and Braiding Techniques

Introduction to Netmaking, Lady Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon
Materials fee (about $7-$7.50) for shuttle kit, thread, and handout. Limited to 5. Two hours. First Session.
Fingerloop Braiding, mar-Joshua ibn-Eleazar ha-Shalib
Fingerloop braiding is an efficient way to produce laces and cords for hose points, trim, etc. We'll work from an early 15th-century instruction manual that describes dozens of different braid patterns. Students will leave class with a copy of the manual and at least one lace of their own manufacture. No experience necessary; open to both adults and children who have at least three fingers per hand. One hour. First Session.
Beginning Knitting in the Round, Lady Rose Otter
This class will give practice in circular knitting using multiple needles. No experience with knitting is necessary. We'll cover knit, purl, casting on, increase and decrease if time allows. Materials fee (between $8.00 and $11.00). Limited to 5. One hour. Third Session.
Knots, Lord Macsen Felinfoel
The tying of yr common knots and hitches. Taught that such gentyls as wyshe may practise the tying of such knots and hitches as are needed by the saylor, chevalier, and camp follower. All so, caring for ropes and cordage, and somewhat on the makyng of ropes. (Possible materials fee.) One hour. Third Session.
Viking Knotwork, Master Dofinn-Hallr Morrisson
Using two macramé-style knots, learn to create period trimming (or military insignia?) for Rus-style men's outerwear. One hour. Second Session.

Courses in Spinning, Weaving, and Dyeing

Ilaine's E-Z Garb Workshop, part 3, Mistress Ilaine de Cameron
Or, "Ok, I've got my fleece, and it' washed and carded. Now what?" Intro to spinning, on the suspended (drop) spindle. Limited to 8 students, with a materials fee of $8 (only if you wish to keep the spindle). One hour. First Session.
Designing a Handwoven Medieval-Style Textile, Mistress Þóra Sharptooth
A discussion of the basic decisions that a modern weaver must make when designing a medieval-style textile. Information also useful to tablet weavers. One hour. Third Session.
What Color Should I Wear?, Mistress Elayne Courtenay ***unconfirmed***
A course on the similarities and differences between the colors of dyestuffs and illumination pigments. Materials fee. One hour. Second Session.
