Re:sound in vmware - was pulseaudio



virtualization adds a whole layer of additional complexity to
sound. I've not used vmware in many years now, but from memory
the vmware settings include buffer sizes for the sound emulation
device ---  I suspect those need to be tweaked to match up with
what alsa thinks it's using.
