Problems with outloud driver

Hello. I'm attempting to get the latest svn emacspeak and the outloud driver working. I'm not very familiar
with how alsa works internally, so some help would be appreciated. Here are the problems so far:

1. if I compile the normal tcleci.so (oss), silencing speech takes a while. This really won't work very well.

2. If I compile atcleci.so, (alsa), the speech is unusable. I can't really describe what it sounds like,
but I think there are some buffering issues. running the outloud server generates piles of errors, which I will include:
allocating 64 samples
output buffered to waveBuffer with size 64
Underrun!!! (at least 1828652809.016 ms long)
(several hundred more of these)
Plug PCM: Hardware PCM card 0 'SB Live 5.1 [SB0220]' device 0 subdevice 1
Its setup is:
  stream : PLAYBACK
  access : RW_INTERLEAVED
  format : S16_LE
  subformat : STD
  channels : 1
  rate : 11025
  exact rate : 11025 (11025/1)
  msbits : 16
  buffer_size : 32768
  period_size : 32
  period_time : 2902
  tstamp_mode : NONE
  period_step : 1
  avail_min : 32
  period_event : 0
  start_threshold : 1
  stop_threshold : 32768
  silence_threshold: 0
  silence_size : 0
  boundary : 1073741824

What can I do to solve this? I'm not using dmix, because my card (
an sb Live) can support hardware mixing so doesn't need it.
I'm running alsa-lib 1.0.17A, kernel 2.6.26.5.

Thanks,
Tyler
