That's presumably because OSS emulation isn't enabled. The system is using
ALSA only, which does not involve /dev/audio or /dev/dsp (these are OSS
devices). If that's a problem, you can load the OSS emulation kernel module.
Emacspeak can use ALSA for auditory icons and several of the available
synthesizers can send output to ALSA as well, hence this shouldn't be giving
you difficulties.
