What a cool trick!  My linux box comes configured, for security
reasons, to disallow root logins from anything but a console.
The getty man page says:

       If  the user is root, then the login must be occuring on a
       tty listed in /etc/securetty.   Failures  will  be  logged
       with the syslog facility.

Assuming that your system uses this same scheme, what entry do you have in
/etc/securetty to allow the root login?
