Hi,
I have been using flite+eflite with Emacspeak-17.0 for a year or
so. There is only one voice, though. There is no difficulty regarding
stopping or pausing the speech like you seem to have experienced. I
had absolutely no problems installing the flite+eflite speech
synthesiser or Emacspeak on a SuSE 8.3 or RH-7.3 system.
You could try this out.
