The speech server for FreeTTS was done rather quickly, and perhaps in
rather poor taste (i.e., if I recall correctly, it acts as a DECtalk
server and just strips out all the DECtalk commands).  For me, the
biggest problem is not getting the server to run, it's getting Emacspeak
to find it.  I've never completely wrapped my mind around what Emacspeak
is doing.  Perhaps it's just too simple and I keep looking for the
harder solution.  

Raman and I sat in his living room devising a plan to do a better job of
the FreeTTS server for emacspeak and I still have the notes (though I'll
need to dig to find them).  But...alas...my real job of leading the Orca
screen reader project has totally consumed me and any potential free
time I've had since then.
