• Strong vs. weak self-connection

  • Piece of coal vs. lump of coal
  • Basic component vs. assembly
  • Surface connection vs. line or point connection

• Singular objects: strongly self-connected (may be wholes or not)

• Plural objects: sums of wholes

  • Collections (the sum is not a whole)
  • Plural wholes (the sum is also a whole)

• Mere sums
