Introduction to Cognitive Science

Data Analysis Exercise
Due: Friday, Dec. 11

No late submissions will be accepted

Using the handout and information given in class, perform a c2 ("chi squared") test on each of the following sets of class data (below), which refer to the reasoning problems done in class on Thurs. Dec 3.

For each set, do the following:

  1. Showing the intermediate values necessary for its calculation, compute c2.
  2. Compare your value of c2 to the "critical value" of 3.84.
  3. Draw an appropriate statistical conclusion, and translate it into a statement about the relevant phenomenon, e.g., very briefly why it might have come out the way it did.

1.Estimate
<500>=500
1x2x3x...45
8x7x6x...17
2.Answer
CorrectIncorrect
Beer81
Even #18

Note: the correct answer for the drinking age problem was "beer" and "16", since you only need to insure that the beer drinker is over age and that the under age person is not drinking beer. The correct answer for the vowel problem was E and 5, since you only need to insure that the E follows the rule and that the 5 doesn't violate it.
