Introduction to Cognitive Science

Short Paper #1
Due: Monday, Sept. 21

Imagine that you attend a cognitive science conference and witness a debate among one property dualist, one reductive materialist (identity theorist), and one eliminative materialist. Do both of the problems below.

  1. Leaving out the personal insults, present the strongest arguments you think each would make for his or her viewpoints, and the strongest counterarguments the other speakers would make in rebuttal. Use the readings, the class discussion, and your own ideas.
  2. Just as the debate panelists are about to draw weapons, someone rushes into the room and excitedly announces a startling and revolutionary research finding that conclusively suggests that one of these three views (it must be one of these three) is correct. Describe what such a finding would have to consist of, and why it supports one of the views and not the others.
