Introduction to Cognitive Science
Short Paper #2
Due: Friday, Oct. 16
Note: I will return on 10/21. All papers must be under my door
by then. However, the computer science building closes around 3PM on
Friday, and will not officially be open during spring break. If you
do not get your paper in by 10/16 at 3PM, there is a chance you will
not be able to hand it in on time.
Please respond to both questions below. Address each one with
equal attention. Use your own words, but be sure to cite all
references used.
- Describe the key elements of the functionalist view of
mind. Include the ways in which it differs from dualism and
materialism.
- Consider connectionism, as you've so far been introduced to it.
In what ways does it seem to be a functionalist approach? In what
ways does it not? Consider in particular traditional symbol
manipulation and materialism.
