Blanking laptop screen

Hello list,

Has anyone found a way to turn off the screen display on laptops, in
order to save power when using emacspeak?

I'm using emacspeak on a terminal on ubuntu intrepid, on a toshiba
l300 laptop.  Googling has not so far been helpful.
