-- If you want speed in html rendering, then play with shr-url --
   it's blazingly fast.

To use emacspeak-epub with renderers other than W3 should not be
too hard -- I just looked at the code, and the only w3
dependency is in the one call to w3-fetch when handling relative
(fragment) urls.

Also, look in  
tvr/mm-customize.el for what your mime settings need to look like
for Emacs to handle application/xhtml+xml
