Speech before loading emacspeak

Hi all,

For those of you with a text-only based system, what do you use for 
system speech before loading emacspeak?

There seem to be several Linux-based screen readers:
* yasr
* brltty
* speakup

speakup, with its kernel support, seems to make the most sense but 
darn if I can't get it to work with Ubuntu 18.

What are you all using?
