you're right, the right thing to do would be to place the
linearized version upon request in a different buffer.

There is currently an ugly way of doing this --namely hit
'L' (cap l) in a w3 buffer when on a link and the link gets
displayed by lynx in another buffer.
This is there primarily for testing, but lynx doesn't
implement tables, you get some sort of linearized version anyway.
