Yes, you should start in runlevel 3, as it's called. Edit your
/etc/inittab where you'll find a line like:

id:5:initdefault:

Change the 5 to 3 so that it reads:
 
id:3:initdefault:

GUI is not yet accessible through speech. It is expected late
this year with the new GNOME 2.0.
