Thanks for the idea.  There is no indication of anything "esd" showing
up in a ps aux output.

Just a little idea : Perhaps the esd sound server is running when you
try to launch emacspeak as a normal user ? If so, try to stop the esd
sound server and to retry launching emacspeak after ? Tell us if
something has changed ?
