DEC-talk server incredibly flaky

I'm running emacspeak 21.0 on emacs 21.3.1 on RedHat Fedora core 1
linux kernel 2.4.22-1.2199.nptl #1 Wed Aug 4 12:21:48 EDT 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
with alsa version 1.0.4.
I'm using fonix Dec-talk V5.00 and Tim Cross's hacked version of
dtk-soft.
It's seriously flaky. I've been running it for a few days hitting
ctrl-e ctrl-s every two minutes or so. Normal speech rate for me is
about 350 although I would like it faster.
Is this fragility normal?
It's breeding a flourishing collection of core files in my home
directory. They're all from dtk-soft but I haven't found out much
else about them yet.
I never had much luck tracking these down with viavoice but am happy
to follow any suggestions.
cheers
Peter
