The following card works out of the box with ViaVoice, alsa and
emacspeak without trouble:

Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
Alsa driver used: snd_via82xx
It is the on board sound card in a Sony Vaio FX501 Notebook.

And now a shameless plug: If you do not have the IVM tts and still
would like to benefit from alsa when using emacspeak, you may consider
using the alsa enabled eflite abailable from:

http://homepage.hispeed.ch/loehrer/flite_alsa.html

There is a binary vailable that is statically linked against flite so
it will not require any additional packages. Of course, flite does not
nearly have as many features as viavoice, in particular there is only one
voice and only in English.

Best regards, Lukas
