I can't answer your question but this is very interesting.  I don't know
if it's related or not, but I am noticing with emacspeak 14 that when I
run ps -a I get a play defunct entry.  It goes away when I unload
emacspeak if I remember correctly.  I don't remember seeing this with
other versions but I'm not absolutely sure.  I thought I'd eventually try
replacing the rpm conversion to debian I did with the official debian
package to see if that changed things.  My audio actually does work fine,
though.
