I have been trying a few things, like unloading the modules that have
oss at the end (snd-mixer-oss and snd-pcm-oss), and changing the line
that reads:

period_time  

from 0 to 23219, the value reported by Tim's utility.  None of these
work.  One thing that did work was to run 

../outloud

from the linux-outloud directory as root.  If I run it as myself, I get
the echo/stutter, but as root, it is clear.

Any ideas?
