espeak and emacspeak:



After further playing with espeak, it turns out that the
portaudio lib that it uses for audio output uses /dev/dsp --
rather than alsa --- this is less than desirable.

When we do implement a speech server for emacspeak, we should
take over the  outputting of audio buffers as is done by the
viavoice servers
