Without seeing the output of "make install" it is very hard to tell what goes wrong when you are trying to install from source. As for selecting espeak as speech-server, you can start emacspeak with flite and then use the command dtk-select-server to choose another speech server. To make this permanent, you can set the DTK_PROGRAM environment variable to espeak before starting emacspeak.
