changing the voice in espeak not working

I just downloaded the 1.39 development version of espeak. Some of the
changes made are to the en-r voice, making it more American. Something
else that has changed is the pronunciation of characters, namely the
"stroke" is now called "slash".

Here is the problem. From the command line, it is using the new
pronunciation. In the tclespeak.cpp file I have uncommented the en-r
line and commented the en and french lines and rebuilt the server. In
both the global espeak-data directory and the one in my home directory
the en-r voice is the default (not that I think this matters).
emacspeak is still, however, using another voice.

Any idea as to what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
rdc
