Getting emacs to work.

OK, ran emacs, got this:  "Error in init file:  error  variable binding
depth exceeds max-specpdl-size"
  
So two questions.
  
1.  What does emacs use as an init file?
  
]2.  More importantly, how do I fix this error?  I know nothing about
emacs unfortunately ... I'm planning to learn as I go with the
documentation, once I get emacspeak working of course.
