emacspeak installation

Which kind of DoubleTalk are you using, the DoubleTalk PC or the
DoubleTalk LT? If you're using the DoubleTalk PC, you will need to
load an extra kernel module and make a device file for the
DoubleTalk PC. This is most easily done by using Jim Van Zandt's
dtlk-install script. To get this script, first go to
<http://www.mv.com/ipusers/vanzandt/> and download dtlk-1.19.tar.gz.
Unpack the archive by typing:

tar zxvf dtlk-1.19.tar.gz

Then change to the newly created dtlk-1.19 directory. If you aren't
logged in as root already, use the su command to become root, then
type:

cp dtlk-install /usr/sbin

Finally, type the following command and then append it to
/etc/rc.d/rc.local:

/usr/sbin/dtlk-install

You are now ready to use the DoubleTalk PC. I ought to do something
to make this easier.

Regardless of which kind of synthesizer you're using, you also need to
make sure that your user account has both read and write permissions
for the synth device. The easiest way to do this is to type (as
root):

chown <username> <device>

Where <username> is the name of your user account and <device> is the
device file for your synthesizer as entered in emacspeakconfig (for
example, /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/dtlk).

I hope this is helpful,
Matt
