calc not speaking properly

Ok, here goes. I type "m-x calc". When I type this, I get the welcome message. But when I use "m-# c" I get the copyright message, but that's not the big problem. Now, any use of the m key to switch modes, such as "m a for algabraic, or m f for fractions mode" produces this message:
    emacspeak calculator mode
and an auditory icon sound. Any ideas?
