w3 mode bookmarks

We're having trouble with the w3-mode bookmarks; if I try to use
Lynx-style with w3-4.0pre.46 it complains that it cannot read them
and if I let w3 create its own bookmarks, I get a file with alternating
lines of URLs and descriptions, but on re-entering w3 it tells me it
cannot ascertain the format of the file. Is there some trick to this?
What is the correct format for bookmarks?

Further to this, if you have any essential bookmarks which would be of
interest to new internet users, please let me know. In particular,
I'm interested in collecting emacspeak friendly search engines to
include on a short help page; we're finding Google terribly confusing,
and metacrawler only fares a little better.
