(shell command failed with no output) and "failed to open your x display

Hi, can anyone help me with a couple of problems I seem to be having
with my multi-media functionality? Each time I try to use realaudio
brouse mode with control e ; I get a (shell command failed with no
output) message. Each time I try to listen to something on the
internet, I get a "failed to open your x display. Please set your
display environment variable and try again."

Which shell command is failing with no output? How do I set this
display envorinment variable?
