w3m configuration confusion

I installed w3m and one of the questions it asked me was what my favorite
external browser was.  Don't know what the best answer ought to have been
for emacspeak (netscape was the first default).  I'm wondering if w3m is
more of an interface hoked to a tunnel that runs another browser.
