Problems with emacspeak-daisy

I just installed emacspeak from cvs. the installation seemed to go ok; my
installation seems to be working.
However, when I try m-x emacspeak-daisy I get a beep and a bunch of
unreadable characters (I'm also using a braillelite on another serial
port). At the bottom it says:
[ad-return-value\
dir default-directory default-filename
default directory nil ((byte-code 9something I can't quite decipher after
that).
It's kind of ironic, as the debian package of emacspeak 17 I had installed
would respond to the emacspeak-daisy command by asking for a filename, but
it wasn't working otherwise so I had to install the cvs version.
I am running debian unstable.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
