A bit more on flite

Well, the compat GCC known as gcc32 did a bit better at compiling
flite without rendering the host totally useless. Did have to dyke
out one line from the makefile to get her installed. It's the submake
into a dir named 'lib'. Hopefully not a big deal. flite itself now
speaks as expected. Have a look at a few lines from 'top' shown below
which shows cc1 using 500+ megs of virtual memory.

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
 5603 root 18 0 541m 187m 308 R 1.4 75.3 0:18.14 cc1
    1 root 16 0 1744 336 312 S 0.0 0.1 0:24.29 init

Sheesh! This is enough to make any box go catatonic for a while at
least. I"m trying now to build it again using the newest GCC to see
if this box can tolerate it. Will leave running over night and either
I smoke the disk or it finishes eventually.

Thank you
