I've used emacspeak with the Multivoice and it does stop correclty.

I'd suggest making sure you have the right kind of cable connecting the
multivoice to the unix box --there is a possibility that the cable is not
sending back the acknowledgements correctly. Other than that I don't have any
other ideas.
