Hi Robert,

I've just updated my CVS version of emacs and emacspeak. I cannot reproduce
the problem you are experiencing. 

I used 

cvs update
make distclean
./configure --enable-font-backend --prefix=/usr/local
make bootstrap
make install

Version is now

GNU Emacs 23.0.60.2 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.5) 
of 2008-02-29 on lion

For emacspeak I did

svn update
make clean
make config SRC=`pwd`
make emacspeak

The version is "27.0 Revision 5474M
