Is there any particular reason why emacspeak still needs emacs to run in
unibyte mode?

I would also like an answer, since my native language is not English. I can safely use ISO-8859-1, but my distro is currently set to use UTF-8 at the console, and maybe this fact relates to the ViaVoice problems I reported some days ago, namely not being able to use less punctuation without loosing some actual letters as well.
