dtk-speak.el questions

Hello,
In dtk-speak.el, verbal description is defined for character, lines 
starting with "aset table".
I noticed the annoying "[*]" in for example "left[*]paren". Why simple 
space is not just enough?
Also on line 1169, there is a number "1" just before left paren. Is this 
a typo, or what that means?
