Thanks to all with your help and ideas. GNU seems to have been at least part
of the problem. with that installed the make gets started now.
Next Problem:
 !! File Error (("Cannot open load file" "dtk-voices"))
The files dtk-voices.el and dtk-voices.elc are there in the lisp dir,
permissions are set
r for owner on the .el and rw for owner on the .elc
Same result if I run it either as the owner or as root.
