significant problems with via voice

ok, here's a better explanation of it now that i'm awake :p :
i try the samples and ecisynchronize never returns.
when i do:
tcl
tcl> load tcleci.so
tcl> synth "test"
via voice says test
and tcl hangs.
what is giong on?
any help would be appreatiated. my machine is a pentium 2 mmx with 399 bogomips running zipspeak without a speakup kernel
