I'm using eSpeak. I do recall having to recompile my own eSpeak under 
Ubuntu to use the runtime option, but this was to keep it from dropping 
the last syllable or two being spoken. With this problem, I'm only 
getting the first syllable or two. In vinux, eSpeak uses the runtime 
option by default, so there's no need to recompile eSpeak to avoid this 
problem. I don't have the problem where I'm losing the last syllable or 
two, but in info mode, and only info mode, when running on the desktop, 
I do have this problem where I only get the first syllable or two spoken 
as I arrow up and down the screen. I don't have this problem in the console.
